Sexual polymorphic trip into the Teenage Angst Suicide cycle of a shrill cult director
As if 18-year-old Dark Smith didn't already have enough problems with the as-good-as unrequieted love of his girlfriend Mel, whom he shares not just with lesbian Lucifer, but also with other party goers (of both sexes), like the twins Surf and Ski... On the day of the big party at Jujyfruit's he falls in love with good-looking, male, Montgomery. Dark spends the day with desperate desires, murderous alien visions and pills which don't always bring much happiness, until the mega-party is due to start.
His companions are themselves no less neurotic and polymorphically perverse, suffocating in the superficiality of their neat raver outfits and looking for true love, humanity and the sense in carrying on. The girls and boys tend not to be particularly successful...
Nipple rings bitten out, fights with cans of tomato soup, a rubber alien on the rampage with his ray-gun, a teenage idol from the TV going astray, multisexuality which defies definition: the last installment of Gregg Araki's Teenage Angst Suicide trilogy brews up a cocktail which would be a fine example of overkill, were it not so good - colourful, weird and ugly all at once.
With an overview of everything, but unable to see through it all, James Duval makes his way, with his open suffering look, through the confusions of interpersonal failings. Gregg Araki himself describes his final teenage apocalypse film as being the least desperate. Even so, there are more suicides and suicide attempts than in all his other films put together, along with bulimia, rape and the relationship-destroying drug. Even the early-morning masturbation cannot be completed, but is made laughable by a crazy mother.
